Green and Pleasant evening

Green and Pleasant, an evening of British string orchestra classics, forms part of the offerings in this year's Hampstead and Highgate Festival, and features Finzi's Let Us Garlands Bring Op 18.

David Wilson-Johnson (pictured) is the baritone soloist in the Finzi, which is the third item on the programme at St John-at-Hampstead church, in Church Row, on May 17 at 7.45pm.

The Finzi connection is well to the fore in this concert, which also features the piano concerto of his close friend Howard Ferguson. Danny Driver is the soloist.

At either end of the programme are two indisputable classics of 20th century English string music - Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and Michael Tippett's muscular Concerto for Double String Orchestra.

The concert, given by the Hampstead and Highgate Festival Orchestra, is conducted by George Vass (pictured). Tickets cost £20 and £15, or £5 for students. The nearest tube station is Hampstead or a number 46 or 268 bus will also get you to the venue.

For more details, call the festival box office on 0870 033 2733 or visit the festival's web site.
