As it was meant to be…

As a start to the Finzi festive season, Dies Natalis was performed on 6th December in Buxted, East Sussex, by soprano Sophie Pullen. The piece was originally scored for ‘high voice’ and Gerald had Elsie Suddaby earmarked for the premiere at the three choirs in 1939. World events were to overtake the plan, and the piece was finally performed by her on 26th January in a Wigmore Hall lunchtime concert. ┬áIt seems extraordinary to us now that Gerald had to give a guarantee to the publishers before they would go ahead with printing it.
