This concert marks the bicentenary of the death of Josef Haydn with a performance of his Missa brevis ‘Sancti Joannis de Deo’, also known affectionately as the Little Organ Mass. This exuberant work will be interspersed with movements from his Pieces for Mechanical Clock. Surprising as it may seem, Haydn wrote 32 individual works for a wide variety of mechanical musical instruments and associated inventions.
Finzi’s festival anthem, Lo, the full, final sacrifice, was composed in 1946. The anthem’s text, assembled by the composer from two poems of Crashaw, memorializes the celebration of the Eucharist. The music is unmistakably Finzi and closes with one of the most beautiful settings of the Amen in Anglican choral music.
